Getting My Hair Braided in Harlem:
A Soulful Experience

There’s something special about getting your hair braided in Harlem. The vibrant streets, the
rhythmic hum of conversation, and the scent of hair products mixing with the aroma of street food
create an atmosphere unlike any other. Harlem isn’t just a place—it’s an experience, a culture, a
rhythm that you feel as soon as you step into a braiding salon.

I walked into a small shop tucked between a bodega and a clothing boutique, where the sound of
Afrobeats played softly in the background. The women inside, skilled and swift, greeted me with
warm smiles and a knowing nod. They’ve been doing this for years—turning strands of hair into art,
weaving not just braids but history, tradition, and beauty.

As I sat in the chair, I felt the gentle but firm tug of my stylist’s fingers working through my hair. The
process was long, but it was more than just hair—it was connection. Women came and went,
chatting in English, French, and various African dialects, sharing laughter, stories, and advice. It
reminded me of home, of Kenya, where hair braiding was a bonding ritual, a symbol of patience,
resilience, and pride.

7 hours later, when she finished the last braid and dipped the ends in hot water, I looked in the
mirror and smiled. The neat, intricate rows framed my face beautifully, each one a testament to skill
and tradition. Stepping out onto the Harlem streets, I felt empowered, adorned with a crown that
spoke of my roots and my journey.

Getting my hair braided in Harlem isn’t just about a hairstyle—it was about reclaiming culture,
finding sisterhood in a city that never stops moving, and carrying a piece of home with me
wherever I go.
